Week 1 – 3

Class Description
Week 1 you step into the life of sketching. You begin to develop basic drawing and sketching skills using soft pencils. It is a great way to start your seasons journey as you learn to draw everything from still life to faces and figures. You will learn mark making, shading, perspective and even enlarging with grids. These basic skills build a great foundation to build the rest of the classes on.

We begin by introducing you to the different paper types you need for each medium that will be needed for the course (see starter pack details on our home page). We explore the different pencil types and how to use them. We will begin with various exercises to get everyone started on the right track, using your new pencils correctly, and looking at things in a new way- the way an artist would! We begin with a small study, concentrating on shapes and outlines, then shading and highlighting to produce a hand-drawn picture that looks 3 dimensional. You will begin to understand hatching and other pencil techniques, setting a ground, tonal values, form, ellipses, the graphite levels in your pencils and how to get proportions with sighting.

We explore perspective and enlarging which are two very useful tools when creating your own artwork. You will be shown ‘formal perspective’ methods which were used by Van Gough when he first started out and similar methods to that of Leonardo Da Vinci when drawing faces and figures. There is an artist’s secret set of rules for getting the correct proportion of a figure, which will be shown to you during these sketching weeks.
